What is the meaning of valentine’s?
Every year, friends, lovers, and
families around the globe celebrate Valentine’s Day; and if you have been
around for a while, you must have been part of these celebrations more than a
few times. But have you ever wondered where this day springs from? If you have,
here’s a little something to let you in.
The story
The story of valentine’s begins in Rome in the 3rd
century A.D when Claudius II who was the emperor then, banned young people from
marrying. He was of the idea that unmarried men would make better soldiers;
which was something he really needed considering his empire was on the verge of
collapsing.
However, Valentine,
who was a priest, believed in marriage and because of this he secretly presided
over marriage ceremonies until Claudius found out and subsequently got him
imprisoned. Before Valentine was beheaded as punishment for his ‘crime’
however, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter whom he left a note signed ‘from
your valentine’.
This signing off phrase has to date been used on messages
sent worldwide every Valentine’s Day.
Dark origins,
beautiful day…
Even though Valentine’s day stems from love that blossomed
between a jailbird and a blind jailer’s daughter, there’s no doubt that it brings
with it lots of joy every time its celebrated and unlike in the past, nowadays,
its’ never just about couples.
From work associates and friends to relatives
and kids, everyone joins in sharing in
the joyousness that comes with the day. The celebration typically includes
arranging of dates and sending of gifts as well as texts and cards with heartwarming
messages.
